For those few of us who braved the Monday morning alarm clock to watch the Germany – Australia match, it was worth every minute of lost sleep. In an otherwise dull and stale weekend of defensive display of football and excuses such as “the ball never moved past the goal” , a young German brigade pumped 4 in the Aussie nets and revived the FIFA slogan “Go for Goal”.
When Brazilians play the game, they play for the love of the game, Italians play for the hatred of letting the ball entering their posts, Argentina plays to show off its geniuses such as Maradona-Messi, and Germans play for their pride. And this young brigade was no exception. They showed all of what you see in a typical German game – long diagonal passes changing the flanks, strong wing play and wall passes, dangerous headers smelling the goal every now and then and powerful bullet-like shots which challenge the opponent goalkeeper from anywhere near the penalty box. Klose’s header was as trademark as Pudolski’s powerful burst. They had the audacity and spirit of youth; they were fast and furious on their opponents. Cacau proved he is ready to challenge if not replace Klose in the starting eleven, Khedira let the German fans forget the unfortunate injury of one Michael Ballack. It was a truly characteristic German display where individual brilliance was ample, but certainly surpassed by a collective force of strength, grit, determination and ruthlessness to crush the opponent.
